Yangon, 30 May 2013 – As a key civil society partner of the United Nations in Myanmar, the Myanmar Red Cross Society works in close collaboration with the UN in dealing with the many humanitarian crises that have occurred in Myanmar recently.
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Yangon recently replaced its official vehicle and sought official permission to donate its used vehicle to the Myanmar Red Cross for use in their humanitarian activities. The gesture was approved by Government and a handing – over ceremony of the Toyota Hi-Lux Double Cab pickup truck was held at the Myanmar Red Cross Society today.
“We are delighted to support Myanmar Red Cross Society with this small gesture,” said Ashok Nigam, the Director of UNIC and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator. “The Myanmar Red Cross Society is one of the first responders in a humanitarian crisis and this vehicle would definitely be an additional asset in such a situation for its august endeavours,” he added.
The vehicle was accepted by the President of the Myanmar Red Cross Society, Professor Dr. Tha Hla Shwe, who thanked the United Nations Information Centre Yangon for this gesture.
