Statement by Vijay Nambiar, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Myanmar

The Special Adviser of the Secretary-General, who reached Yangon this evening, expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss of lives and destruction in Meiktila township in Mandalay division.

While firm action by the authorities was needed to prevent further loss of life or spread of violence, the continued fostering of communal harmony and preservation of peace and tranquility among the people was the most urgent priority and this was the responsibility of all sections of society. Religious leaders and other community leaders must also publicly call on their followers to abjure violence, respect the law and promote peace.

Yangon 21 March 2013 – As the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Myanmar, I am deeply concerned with the violence and loss of lives and property in Meiktila Township, Mandalay Division. Prevention of such incidents must be given top priority.
In addition to ardent efforts by the religious and political leaders and the authorities to calm the situation, I call upon all parties in the unrest in Meiktila to exercise the utmost tolerance and restraint within their communities. ENDS

Delegation from the United Nations concludes visit to Myanmar

Yangon, Myanmar, 18 March 2013. A United Nations delegation wrapped-up a 10-day visit to the Union of Myanmar today. Delegates from 21 Member States travelled to Myanmar from New York and Rome to meet with government authorities, parliamentarians and important stakeholders in Yangon and Naypyidaw, as well as in several localities in Central Myanmar (Dry Zone), Rakhine and Southern Shan.

Yangon, Monday 18, February, 2013: The Tatmadaw officially discharged 24 children in a ceremony in Yangon on 15 February, Friday, attended by senior officials of the Tatmadaw, the Representative of UNICEF as co-chair of a UN Country Task Force on children and armed conflict, senior officials from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, Rehabilitation and Resettlement and member agencies of the Country Task Force.

Media Release: Humanitarian assistance leaves for Hpakant, Kachin State

“Humanitarian assistance must flow un-interrupted as long as people are in need” – Ashok Nigam

Yangon, 17 February 2013 – UN and INGO humanitarian staff left this morning for Hpakant in Kachin State, to assess the situation in the 41 camps hosting some 5,000 people displaced by the conflict in the area, and deliver much needed life-saving assistance. They took with them food, including rice, pulses, oil, salt, wheat-soy blend and well as family kits including tarpaulins, kitchen sets, blankets, mosquito nets, basic medical supplies and water purification materials.
